Helpful when considering research in France
Recruitment
This is what guarantees the reliability of the findings. We never underestimate this point and take great care in working with trustworthy recruiters. We also believe we should adapt to a target’s availability and not the other way round. This tends to mean evenings for focus groups, as one can usually manage to find windows in the daytime for IDIs.

Venues
Venues in France are of a high standard. They practically all include a translating system allowing a video recording of the sessions in both French and the language in which they’ve been translated. Note that many studios now post the video recordings online for 2 months, where they can then be downloaded. This avoids carrying around (or forgetting and shipping) DVDs. Studios operate not by an hourly rate but by mornings, afternoons and evenings after 6:00 p.m., and in any combination.

Simultaneous interpreters
We always select experienced interpreters and provide them with as much background on the topic to be covered as possible so they are as ready as can be. We tend to recommend native speakers of the end (your) language. Most interpreters are willing to work solo, but it is an exhausting job so one has to build in breaks at least in-between sessions.

Ethnography
It’s very much a question of organisation:
  • Confirming the visits and checking best combination.
  • Being equipped with working (and fully charged) devices.
Attendance is usually the tricky bit: as much as clients wish to attend, we advise that there be no more than 3 at a given time. These come on top of the moderator and interpreter. Homes can be quite small in Paris, and having an army of foreign visitors and gear can be impressive for respondents.

Location (& season)
Paris is the obvious place, for many reasons: international access, unrivalled charm, the hub of what is a very centralised country, and it’s where most researchers are based! But when possible, it is advised to travel out a little, and include some of the 75% of the rest of the French. France is a fantastic country to spend holidays in. And holidays are a big thing here, with the French who enjoy a minimum of 5 weeks a year not counting bank holidays and bridge weekends. And conducting research from Mid-July to late August is difficult so best aim for before or after.

Timing things
Because one can be late – whether respondent or travelling client – build in an extra 15’ for or around sessions. Bear in mind that the French like to talk (and they contribute a lot of valuable insights), so allow for more time than you might elsewhere. We also believe that the warm up is essential to build a rapport which will pay off in the quality of the contribution... Timing indications: a F2F IDI is rarely less than 60’, and 90’ for a focus group is never enough. Slightly longer sessions barely incur extra costs than the shorter versions.
